Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was considered one of the best all-rounders in the world of cricket, but despite scoring a total of 17 centuries and 71 half-centuries in his career, he was never made the permanent captain of the national team.
The former Indian all-rounder told Sports18 in an interview that the reason he did not become captain was former Australian player and Indian team coach Greg Chappell.
“Many of the team’s senior players were not happy with Greg Chappell’s way of running the team,” he said. Just a month before the World Cup, he changed the team’s batting order, which impressed everyone.
According to him, things were not going well with former coach Sachin Tendulkar and he sided with his teammate in this matter.
“I wanted to be the captain but then there was the Greg Chappell incident and it felt like it was a matter of choosing between Chappell or Sachin.”
Remember that Yuvraj had retired from all forms of cricket in 2019.
Yuvraj says that some officials of Indian Cricket Board did not like this and it was said that anyone can be made captain but not Yuvraj.
“I was abruptly removed from the vice-captaincy and Mahi (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) was made the captain for the 2007 T20 World Cup. I thought I would be made captain. “
However, he says he has no regrets about not becoming captain and Dhoni proved to be a good captain.
“I think Dhoni was the best choice to captain the ODI team,” Yuvraj added.
It should be noted that under Dhoni’s captaincy, the Indian team had won the T20 World Cup in 2007 by defeating Pakistan in the final.
