The app, called Billi Bai, was created on Microsoft’s hosting platform GitHub and featured images of Muslim women journalists, community leaders and actors for sale.
The app also included pictures of Muslim women with their Twitter, Facebook or Instagram usernames.
The app was forged and did not actually sell anything, including any woman, but Muslim women were included in the list for sale to harass and defame them.
According to Al Jazeera, Ismat Ara, a Muslim journalist from the Indian capital, New Delhi, filed a case with the Delhi Police under the Crimes Act after his name and picture appeared in the app for sale.
In addition, in the city of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, a lawsuit was filed against a Muslim journalist named Sidra for creating the said app and adding her picture to the food for sale there.
After the issue came to light, Indian politicians also expressed concerns over it and female politician Priyanka Chatterjee also demanded action from the Ministry of Information Technology through her tweet.
The Ministry of Information Technology said the app was shut down following a complaint by Muslim women and other politicians across India against the Billi Bai application on Twitter.
The app also included the name of Nobel Prize-winning Pakistani social leader Malala Yousafzai, including actress Shabana Azmi, and a photo of 65-year-old Muslim women.
The app was shut down after lawsuits were filed against Billi Bai in Mumbai and New Delhi and people started trending on Twitter.
According to Indian media, three people have been arrested after the legal proceedings but it is still questionable who is the mastermind behind this thinking.
Prior to Billi Bai, a similar app called Sally Deals was created on Gut Hub in July 2021, and pictures of Muslim women were uploaded to the sales section.
One of the main reasons for this may be that Muslim women are making their place in society, reading and writing and an educated mother can create a better family.
