Nuclear talks enter final stage, US restores sanctions on Iran

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the recent talks in Vienna were the most important.

Nuclear talks

According to media reports, the exemption allowed Russian, Chinese and European companies to pursue nuclear non-proliferation efforts to make it difficult to effectively use Iranian nuclear sites to develop weapons.

The restored immunity was revoked by the United States in 2019 and 2020 under former President Donald Trump, who withdrew from the nuclear deal.

The purpose of the indirect talks between the two countries is for the United States to return to the agreement and for Iran to resume implementation of the agreement.

The deal was struck under former US President Barack Obama and Joe Biden has vowed to try to get the United States back into the deal.

A report signed by US Secretary of State Anthony Blankenship has been sent to Congress by the State Department stating that the restoration of sanctions exemption has been agreed upon by a group of countries including Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, UK and US. The agreement reached will help in the negotiations in Vienna on the return.

According to the report, the waiver of sanctions on these activities is designed to facilitate negotiations that will help the United States return to the agreement for full implementation of the JCPOA and Iran’s plan of action. It will lay the groundwork for a return to the implementation of promises.

The report states that the agreement is designed to meet US nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security interests and to limit Iran’s nuclear activities, with these objectives in mind as a matter of policy discretion. While the purpose of the agreement is not the basis of some take and some two.

According to the report, the measures include redesigning Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor, design and modification of its Fordo facility for the production of stable isotope, operations, training and services related to its Bushehr nuclear power plant.

The United States and Iran have held eight rounds of indirect talks in Vienna since April, aimed at reviving the agreement that lifted sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program. No official announcement has been made as to when the new round of talks will begin, but expectations are high that the next round of talks could take place next week.

After Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in 2018 and re-imposed tough sanctions, Iran gradually began to violate the agreement, with Western diplomats fearing a return to the agreement after Iran’s nuclear progress. Is very unlikely.

A senior State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the sanctions needed to be waived in order to allow technical talks, which were key to a return to technical negotiations.

He said the restoration of immunity did not indicate that the United States was on track to reach a compromise.

Henry Rome, a commentator for the Eurasia Group, said the resumption of sanctions was a good sign of progress.

He says the exemption from sanctions is a way of expressing goodwill or a facilitation for Iran, but more than that it is a technical step aimed at ensuring the implementation of the ongoing talks in Vienna.
