Heavy rain on Sunday caused a passenger bus to slip off a mountain road and fall into a deep ravine, killing 19 people and injuring 12.

According to Mehtab Shah, assistant administrator of Sherani district in Balochistan, the bus was carrying about 35 passengers, who were traveling from the capital Islamabad to Quetta. The death toll is expected to rise as many of the injured are in critical condition.

Rescue workers are searching for survivors in the wreckage of the wrecked vehicle and in the area adjacent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said.

He said the bus apparently slipped on a wet road during heavy rains and the driver lost control of the vehicle, which fell into a ditch about 200 feet (61 meters).

Last month, at least 22 people were killed when a minibus fell into a ditch in Balochistan.
