In the third and final Test match of the series played in Cape Town, India won the toss and elected to bat first.
Captain Virat Kohli played a brilliant innings of 79 runs but once again his dream of making the 71st international century did not come true while Chattiswar Pujara scored 43 runs.
India returned to the pavilion with 223 runs, for South Africa Kagisu Rabada took 4 wickets and Marco Jensen took 3 wickets.
South African batsman Jaspreet Bumrah failed to make a significant impact due to his excellent bowling.
Patterson was the most successful batsman with 72 runs while Temba Baumama scored 28 and Keshp Maharaj 25 runs.
The entire South African team was bowled out for 210 in the first innings and India took a 13-run lead in the first innings, with Bumrah taking five wickets.
India’s second innings got off to a disappointing start with four batsmen returning to the pavilion for 58 runs, but a 94-run partnership between Kohli and Reshabh Pant kept the visitors at bay.
Kohli scored 29 runs but Reshabh Pant played his best and scored an unbeaten century. However, the Indian team piled up 198 runs in the second innings and gave South Africa a target of 212 runs to win the match.
Marco Jensen took 4 wickets and Kagisu Rabada took 3 wickets.
In pursuit of the target, Aiden Merkram went for just 16 runs but then the pair of captain Dan Elgar and Kegan Petersen went strong against the Indian bowlers.
The duo completed the team’s century as well as a 78-run partnership, the partnership ended when Elgar became Bumrah’s wicket after scoring 30 runs.
From the other end, Patterson continued his excellent batting and added 54 runs with Rasi van der Dawson. ۔
After that Dawson and Temba Bawoma batted responsibly and did not allow any more wickets to fall and South Africa achieved the target at a loss of 3 wickets, Dawson scored 41 and Baoma scored 32 runs.
Petersen was declared the best player of the series as well as the match for his excellent batting.
With the victory in this match, South Africa also won the series 1-2 and India’s dream of winning the series on South African soil was shattered.
